Coloration & Coat

While the Biewer Terrier is a descendent of the Yorkshire Terrier, the biggest difference lies in the color of the breed! The typical Yorkshire Terrier will be tan and have a blue saddle. Colors range from blue & tan, blue & gold, black & gold, or black & tan. However, a Biewer Terrier will be tricolored with Black/White/Gold or Blue/White/Gold both with different shades of tan on the face.

The Biewer Terrier has a long, soft, and “flowy” coat. The hair is very silky and smooth to the touch. Hair can be kept long or short. Long hair coats should be maintained and brushed often to prevent matting and discomfort.

Pedigree

Originally, the Allgemeiner Club der Hundefreunde Deutschland recognized the breed as a Biewer Yorkie, but today it is recognized as the Biewer Terrier by the Biewer Terrier Club of America. The Biewer Terrier is also a part of the AKC, but not separately recognized from the Yorkshire Terrier.

Diet & Exercise

It is important to feed the Biewer Terrier a high quality, small breed food. Small breed dogs tend to suffer from tooth decay and sluggishness. Since the Biewer Terrier is high energy, they need the proper diet to keep them energized! Due to the high energy of the Biewer Terrier, exercise is a must to prevent destructive behavior.

Temperament

For it’s size, the Biewer Terrier has a larger than life personality. This coupled with it’s playfulness, eagerness to learn, and need be a lap dog, makes the breed the perfect companion pet for the whole family. The Biewer Terrier is not an aggressive dog, but he is stubborn and will definitely let you know when someone is at the door.

Life Expectancy

Eventually, we will all have to go through the dreaded day that our little ball of fur crosses over the rainbow bridge. It’s something that we never want to think about and is always the last thing on our mind when picking out a puppy. Fortunately the Biewer Terrier, being a small breed, has a life expectancy of 12-15 years or longer.

Health Problems

The Biewer Terrier shares some of the same common health problems as the Yorkshire Terrier. Some common health problems are Legg-Perthes Disease, Allergies, Retinal Dysplasia, Collapsed Trachea, Tooth Decay, Hypoglycemia, Patellar Luxation, Bladder Stones, Portosystemic Shut, and Distichiasis.
